The paradigm emergent from this work is shared with a number of
other projects concerned with self-organizing (and self-reproducing
with morphogenetic transformations) systems, including
those of John Padgett (Florentine renaissance and markets), Peter Bearman
(cooperative networks, generalized exchange, transformations of
institutional form and the structure of career biographies),
Ronald Breiger (generalized exchange, ...),
Siegwart Lindenberg (conditions for the emergence of social
solidarity), to name a few.
In my own fieldwork with Lilyan Brudner, the
Austrian case represents self-organization of a multi-class system,
while the Tlaxcalan case (work jointly with Michael Schnegg) represents
issues of emergent solidarity in a one-class system.
