Using fortran program Dyn in conjunction with Pajek for analyzing simulated and actual network evolution

in terms of micro dynamics of agent behaviors and strategies and how these are related, in reciprocal fashion, to the emergence of macrostructure. In the simplest case each iteration in actual network evolution is compared to a simulated iteration given the same agent-attribute and network structure to study how agent behaviors depart from randomness in structured ways. The findings at each iteration and over classes of agents provide clues to varieties of agent cognition, strategy and rule-governed behaviors. Findings are useful, in turn, for redesign/reconceptualizing simulations. Within this approach I pose questions about criticalities in network evolution (emergence of giant components, bicomponents, tricomponents) and how they interact with the attributes and network positions (e.g., centrality and connectivity by degree and block membership) to produce systemic changes in the organizational environment as well as in the kinds of behaviors exhibited by agents. Illustrations include time series in kinship, marriage and political networks and in Walter Powell's study of biotech industry networks, 1988-2000.
