Fall Quarter, 1999 Office Hours: Tues/Th 11-12 over lunch, 3-3:30 and by Appt SSPA4169 x5893, x8495 (Luisa 3175 SSPA)

College graduates will work increasingly in areas that touch on international and domestic issues involving economic and community development. For both the general student and those whose professions may concentrate on this area, this class provides an introduction and review of issues -- focusing on community, national, and international perspectives on findings and applications of anthropological and economic research -- concerning development and social change, anthropological critiques of development processes, development agencies and development economics, displacement of peoples and transnational migration, issues of gender, and effects of the new international division of labor.

List #2: Community & National level Field Studies ("drw"= available from instructor) <back> (See bibliography below) Students can choose to do their second paper on an anthropological case study of development and social change in a well-studied field site in the third or fourth world. You should familiarize yourself with Polly Hill's text as a basis for developing an approach to the analysis of the case study, and be responsible for tying their analysis into topic 1 below, but you may specialize in one of topics 2-4:

1. Rural stratification, occupational and ethnic differentiation (structural flows)

2. Labor and division of labor, role of women, migration (flows of people)

3. Markets, trade, land sales, credit (flows of goods & titles)

4. Agriculture, land tenure, inheritance, ecology (seasonal & generational cycles)

A group can draft an introduction, section 1, and conclusion, with sections 2-4 individually authored. In this case individual work, the group product, and the coherence or integration between the two will each be part of the grade.

List #3: Specific Problem-Oriented Bibliography <back> Other possible questions for this paper (with additional reading) could relate to specific studies you evaluated for paper #2: 1) what are the development impacts experienced by local case-study communities (divide the impacts among the three team members, and each report on a specific set or type of development impacts, including:), 2) responses in the population, 3) problems in the way the development was planned or carried out, including misconceptions on the part of outsiders, 4) net results, and 5) alternatives? The group can draft an introduction and conclusion, with separate parts on different types of development impacts.

(New intro text for undergraduate classes on development and social change. a new title that should work well in the courses of PSN/WSN members) "McMichael (Rural & Development Sociology, Cornell University) has organized the book around helping students "think about development as a transnational project designed to integrate the world, and it helps them to see how this project is currently undergoing dramatic revision via economic globalization." He documents how the "development project" formed between the late 1940s and early 1970s, and then began to unravel before being resurrected by "the globalization project" in the 1980s. The book concludes with reflections on rethinking understandings of development. Throughout the book there are boxes that flesh out the argument in the main text with case study material." -- David Myhre UC-San Diego
