She was above average intelligence and graduated 1 CONC from Murdock HS in 1926 or 1927. She 1 CONC worked in a beauty shop in Lakeland, earned a manager's license and 1 CONC eventually opened her own shop in Willmer until 1933 when she had to 1 CONC close it due to financial problems (this was the worst part of the 1 CONC Depression). She is described as dark haired, a jolly person and somewhat 1 CONC plump. His father worked for the railroad and after several moves, 1 CONC settled in Argentine KS, a suburb of Kansas City, where Gene graduated 1 CONC from high school. Here he met Louise Mack, a bright, super-achiever who 1 CONC was two grades ahead of him. He attended Kansas State where he played 1 CONC basketball and football for a couple of years but decided to leave in 1 CONC order to marry Lou in 1923. He worked for her parents' lumber company in 1 CONC several places in Kansas before they moved to Boca Raton, Florida. Gene 1 CONC worked as a carpenter on a large mansion in Boca and at the same time 1 CONC built a one or two room house for themselves. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gene then worked for the W. T. Grant Co., a large retail chain and in 1 CONC 1932 followed his mentor from Grants to Montgomery Wards. During the 1 CONC depression in the '30's, each Wards store was expected to keep a basic 1 CONC inventory of such things as overalls, socks underwear etc in stock or the 1 CONC store manager was fired. Gene was superb at displaying merchandise, due 1 CONC to his skill as a carpenter, and organizing people. By the time he and 1 CONC Louise adopted Betty in St. Paul, they lived in the Highland Park area 1 CONC and he was manager of the large St. Paul Wards store. About 1938 he was 1 CONC promoted to Merchandise Manager of all Wards stores and transferred to 1 CONC the Chicago area where they lived in Kenilworth and he soon was named a 1 CONC vice-president of operations. Gene's avocation was farming and they 1 CONC bought a farm in Twin Lakes Wisconsin; this was the family's weekend 1 CONC retreat and Gene raised Duroc hogs for show at state fairs throughout the 1 CONC upper midwest. In 1942, Sewall Avery, the President of Wards, fired him, 1 CONC as he did most people whom he felt threatened by due to their ability. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gene volunteered for the army, entered service 10/6/42 and went in as a 1 CONC major in the supply end of things. His initial job in the US was to 1 CONC oversee the building and purchase of water craft to bring troops and 1 CONC supplies ashore for the Pacific theater. He served in Australia from 1 CONC February 1944 to April 1944 where he was Chief of Equipment & Supplies. 1 CONC From February 1945 to June 1945 he was responsible for the planning of 1 CONC procurement, distribution and storage of all transportation corp supplies 1 CONC in the Southwest Pacific Theatre; this took him to Hollandia, New Guinea 1 CONC Leyte and Manila, where he was exposed to such wet conditions that he 1 CONC contracted jungle rot so badly he was shipped back to Vaughn General 1 CONC Hospital, Hines Illinios for several months. He was discharged as a full 1 CONC Colonel early in February 1946. 1 CONT 1 CONT He immediately started his own chain of retail stores in small towns: 1 CONC Ottumwa, Sigourney, Montezuma, Decorah, New Sharon, Algona in Iowa and 1 CONC Waseca in Minnesota are some of the locations. He was instrumental in 1 CONC starting a buying group, located in Minneapolis, to increase their 1 CONC purchasing power and reducing their costs. They continued to live in 1 CONC Kenilworth until Betty's graduation from Joseph Sears Elementary School 1 CONC in 1947 when they moved to a rented home in Interlachen Park, Hopkins. 1 CONC After several years, they built the first house in Parkwood Knolls, a 1 CONC development of Gene's friend, Carl Hanson. As a carpenter, Gene not only 1 CONC supervised the building crew but also worked on the house. They had an 1 CONC apartment for Louise's maiden aunt, Annie, a retired school teacher in 1 CONC Kansas City, whom in many respects Betty felt closer to than her parents. 1 CONT 1 CONT During the late 1950's and early 1960's, Gene gradually sold or closed 1 CONC his stores, in some cases keeping the buildings and leasing them to other 1 CONC operators such as JCPenney. He had bought two farms in Iowa, initially as 1 CONC an avocation but they soon became a separate business raising feeder hogs. 1 CONT 1 CONT I first met Gene when I came to pick up Betty for a date in 1953. I asked 1 CONC Betty who the gardener was on his hands and knees who I walked past 1 CONC coming into the house and she explained that was her father. He was a 1 CONC gruff, no-nonsense man, very intimidating to a young person interested in 1 CONC his daughter. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gene was not close to his parents. Betty only saw them once or twice and 1 CONC I never met either of them. They moved to the Los Angeles area sometime 1 CONC in the 1920's or 30's. His father became superintendent of parks. After 1 CONC his death, Gene and Lou visited his mother once a year in Inglewood and 1 CONC then in the nursing home. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gene preferred working with his hands, outdoors if possible. He abhorred 1 CONC paperwork although he enjoyed reading biographies and history. He was 1 CONC extremely practical in everything he did. He claimed that his success was 1 CONC being in the right place at the right time and that his ability to work 1 CONC with his hands, particularly as a carpenter, helped immensely in his 1 CONC merchandising with Grants and Wards. 0 @I009@ INDI 1 NAME Louise /Mack/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 6 MAY 1901 2 PLAC Kansas City KS 1 DEAT 2 DATE DEC 1984 2 PLAC Edina MN 1 FAMS @F004@ 0 @I010@ INDI 1 NAME Herbert Wilson /Rogers/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 2 DEC 1901 2 PLAC Minneapolis MN 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 JAN 1966 2 PLAC Deephaven MN 2 CAUS Cancer 1 ADDR 650 Heathcote Dr. 2 CONT Deephaven 2 CONT MN 1 FAMS @F003@ 1 FAMC @F019@ 1 NOTE @NI010@ 0 @NI010@ NOTE 1 CONC Eight Years after Dad's death, the following was written by Len Simonet, 1 CONC one of his law partners, and is in the firm's archives: 1 CONT "Herbert W Rogers was the first person to become affiliated with the firm 1 CONC of Best & Flanagan. Very little is known of his date of birth nor the date and 1 CONC place of his wife, Mary's, birth. He was apparently married in England a 1 CONC few years before immigrating to Massachusetts 1 CONT 1 CONT He was a passenger in the ship LYON which sailed from London about June 1 CONC 22, 1632, to Boston, arriving September 16. Many of the passengers 1 CONC belonged to the company of Reverand Thomas Hooker whose church was in 1 CONC Chelmsford, Essex. White was a common name in that town but there is no 1 CONC satisfactory evidence connecting John with any of the families in the 1 CONC parish register. 1 CONT 1 CONT John was one of the first settlers of Cambridge, Mass., Hartford, Ct and 1 CONC Hadley Mass. In Cambridge, his home was on a street called Cow Yard Row; 1 CONC it was 3/4 of an acre and on August 5, 1633 he was allotted another 3/4 1 CONC acre as a cow yard to go with the 30 acres he had for farming (Gore Hall, 1 CONC the library (in 1860) of Harvard University later stood on the site of 1 CONC the cow yard). The amount of land allocated to him indicated he was 1 CONC neither among the poorest nor the wealthiest of the settlers. He was 1 CONC admitted a freeman of the colony march 4, 1633. In February he was 1 CONC elected to the board of seven men called Townsmen or Selectmen. 1 CONT 1 CONT John sold his hose to Nicholis Danforth on October 20, 1635, and the rest 1 CONC of his property on May 30, 1636, in order to join Rev Hooker and the 100 1 CONC other men, women and children who wanted more space for themselves and 1 CONC others expected from England. They made a six week trip to Hartford CT 1 CONC where he is listed as one of the original proprietors. His allotments 1 CONC consisted of the home lot of two acres, about 40 acres of meadow and 32 1 CONC acres of upland at Hockman, east of the Great River. The home lot was 10 1 CONC rods south of the Little River on the east side of what, in 1860, was 1 CONC called Governor Street, formerly Cole Street. He was chosen a Selectman 1 CONC in 1642, 1646, 1651 and 1656. 1 CONT 1 CONT After Rev Hooker died in 1647, dissension arose between two factions of 1 CONC the church, one of which zealously opposed any relaxation of requirements 1 CONC of participation in church privileges. On April 18, 1659, 60 followers of 1 CONC this latter group, including John White, moved to Hadley MA. His property 1 CONC was described in the town record as: "One houselott containing 8 acres 1 CONC more or lesse as it lyes. Bounded by the land of Peter Tillton south by 1 CONC the land granted to Thomas Stanlye North, abutting West against the 1 CONC common street, and East against the woods; being the bredth sixteene rod 1 CONC and in length eightie". After the town was legally organized, he was 1 CONC elected as a selectman in 1662, 1663 and 1665. He also served as Deputy 1 CONC (Representative) to the General Court (Legislature) of Massachusetts 1 CONC sitting in Boston in 1664 and 1669. 1 CONT 1 CONT In Hartford, there were still problems resulting in another split in the 1 CONC church. John returned to Hartford in the early 1670s and was chosen the 1 CONC Elder of the South Church. He was thereafter exempt from holding civil 1 CONC office but was called on as an arbitrator, referee and council in 1 CONC ecclesiastical matters. 1 CONT 1 CONT Mary died before he did, probably after returning to Hartford. His date 1 CONC of death is not known but is between the date of his will, December 17, 1 CONC 1683 and the date of inventory of his estate, January 23, 1684. The 1 CONC extended family moved to Flat "L", 723 S.E. 7th Street in 1913; Harriet 1 CONC died there in 1919 and they remained there until Bert's accidental death 1 CONC 5/29/30 when he fell against his golf club at Highland Park Golf Course, 1 CONC St. Paul. He had been made Manager of the Frederic Hotel in St. Paul just 1 CONC 5 months earlier. 1 CONT 1 CONT The family escaped the heat and hay fever of Minneapolis starting in 1 CONC about 1915 by spending part of the summers at Madeline Island. There are 1 CONC numerous pictures of Herbert W "Jack" Rogers with other young people, 1 CONC notably Betty Hull. One picture in particular shows Jack, Betty Hull and 1 CONC another friend standing on the steps of The Mission holding silver cups 1 CONC as winners of the 1917 Boys and Girls Tennis Matches...the picture and 1 CONC the cup are above the telephone at Mereshack. 1 CONT 1 CONT After Bert's death, Jennie and Nellie, or "Nana" and "Titi" as I named 1 CONC them, took an efficiency apartment on the 6th floor rear of the Oak Grove 1 CONC Hotel on Oak Grove Street in Minneapolis. Marcella Brown Nord, who with 1 CONC her older sister, Mary worked for my parents during the late 1930's for 1 CONC $2 per week plus room and board, recalls Titi saying that the biggest 1 CONC mistake in her life was not marrying a man she loved because he was not a 1 CONC Catholic. Taking a Sunday afternoon drive in the country was part of 1 CONC Americana and Nana loved to drive...fast. She had Packards, a luxury car 1 CONC of its era, the last one being a grey 1939 model. While my parents built 1 CONC their dream home in Maplewoods in 1940, I lived with Nana and Titi, Jimmy 1 CONC with Baga and Mom and Dad with Asher and Marg White. I had to sleep in 1 CONC the same hide-away bed as they did and I had the habit of wiggling my 1 CONC legs before I could sleep...this drove them nuts and their efforts to 1 CONC break me of the habit was a constant yet friendly battle. Nana had to 1 CONC drive me the 12 miles to Groveland School in Minnetonka for the 5 or 6 1 CONC months I was with them. Also, they had me as a convalescent since I had 1 CONC my appendix removed during that period. 1 CONT 1 CONT The new Maplewoods house had a seperate apartment over the garage for 1 CONC Nana & Titi. In any event, they started 1 CONC their own business, ROGERS BROTHERS, a manufacturer of sewing machines. 1 CONC They took a full page advertisement in the 1862-1863 Hamilton City 1 CONC Directory (see scrapbook) extolling the virtues of their machines. They 1 CONC lived at Simcoe and McNab which is very close to the factory at Simcoe 1 CONC and James. The business was not listed in the 1865-1866 directory. 1 CONT 1 CONT Fred and Harriet had their picture taken by W.A. Davis, a photographer 1 CONC located at the northeast corner of Hughson and King Streets in the center 1 CONC of downtown Hamilton. However, no record of their marriage is found in 1 CONC the counties around Hamilton, Toronto and Buffalo. They moved to the 1 CONC Wheeling, W. They lived some 10 miles north of Moundsville on Boggs Run 1 CONC Road which is much closer to Wheeling than to Moundsville. Boggs Run Road 1 CONC even today (1998) is a narrow, steep and winding road descending 1500 to 1 CONC 2000 feet alongside a narrow stream in a deep valley from a plateau south 1 CONC towards the Ohio River and Wheeling in the Union District of Marshall 1 CONC County, W. Va. Fred "read" for the law while he worked, perhaps with the 1 CONC firm of Caldwell & Boyd in Wheeling, since Fred and S.W. They moved to 1 CONC 2910 Eoff, Wheeling, in order to be closer to the office. 1 CONT 1 CONT In June, 1876, the family, including the two boys, Herbert A. and 1 CONC Frederick Jr., arrived in Minneapolis. They lived in an apartment at 1 CONC 1510-4th Ave. So. and Fred went into practice of law with B.W. Smith at 1 CONC 201 Nicollet. The practice prospered: in 1879 he moved to 209 Nicollet 1 CONC and in 1885 to 248 Nicollet. Meanwhile, the residence changed several 1 CONC times but never more than a block or two from the original home, finally 1 CONC settling at 1504 Clinton Ave So. (More information on John Wilson can be found in the notes 1 CONC under his name). 1 CONT 1 CONT After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, peace prevailed. However, in 1 CONC England poor harvests and a decline in exports produced poverty and 1 CONC unemployment. In 1825, the first of the cyclical crisis and depressioms 1 CONC occurred which upset commerce and industry every 9 years or so throughout 1 CONC the 19th century. In the summer of 1830, the last of the agrarian 1 CONC risings: laborers in the sothern and eastern districts had grievances due 1 CONC to low wages, winter unemployment and the introduction of thrashing 1 CONC machines. Rioting and burning but no killings. Nine were hanged, 450 were 1 CONC transported to Australia and 400 imprisoned. In the early 1830s, laws wre 1 CONC passed to allow some male householders to vote as well as leaseholders; 1 CONC parliamentary reforms slowly gave wider representation in the House of 1 CONC Commons. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the obituary of his son, William Clayton Rogers, in 1911, it mentions 1 CONC that William Sr. was a pioneer of Cleveland and laid out and donated 1 CONC Clinton Park to Cleveland. 1 CONT 1 CONT Much of the following information was obtained at the Historical Soceity 1 CONC Library, Case-Western Reserve University, Cleveland OH. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1850 census reports them in Cuyago County: William as a 40 year-old 1 CONC farmer and Harriet 11 years younger; Montague (12) and Frederick (12) as 1 CONC well as Wm. Clayton (10), Emily (5), Clarence (2), all born in England, a 1 CONC 2 month-old female born in Ohio and Thomas (20) born in England are also 1 CONC mentioned. The age is probably wrong for Harriet just as it is for 1 CONC William. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1857-58 City Directory lists Harriet as a dressmsker living near Main 1 CONC & Elm on the west side of Cleveland. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1860 census lists William as a gardener in Newburgh Township owning 1 CONC $1000 in real estate and $300 other property. Harriet is now listed as 5 1 CONC years younger than William which puts her birth year closer to 1810 than 1 CONC 1815. Interestingly, Montague and Frederick are listed in both their 1 CONC parents' household on July 9, 1860 and also in Rachael Rogers' (40) 1 CONC household, in the 2nd Ward (southeast of downtown), on July 20, 1860; 1 CONC with Rachael are Robert (20), Isaac (18), Wm (15), and John (13) all born 1 CONC in Ohio just as Rachael was. The twins' occupation is listed as sewing 1 CONC machine operators...this, of course, foretells their moving to Hamilton, 1 CONC Ontario, to start the Rogers Brothers Sewing Machine Company about 1861. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1862 City Directory lists William as a landscape gardener at Hemlock 1 CONC Park, Cedar Avenue, and Harriet as a teacher living on Cedar Ave. 1 CONT 1 CONT The Directories for 1863-1875 listed various Wm Rogers with a variety of 1 CONC occupations such as brewer, carpenter, brakeman and clerk, but I couln't 1 CONC find any other familiar names at their addresses. In 1871-72, a Mrs. 1 CONC Harriet Rogers is listed as a boarder at 10 Union but no one else 1 CONC familiar. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1880 Directory shows Wm at 2348 Brecksvill Rd/ which is the address 1 CONC given on his death certificate, but he is not in the 1880 census...at 1 CONC least the two Wm H. Rogers do not seem to be nor is a Harriet in the 1 CONC census. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1882 through 1887 directories have Mrs. H.M. Rogers at 2217 Broadway 1 CONC and the 1889-90 lists Mrs. Harriet M. Rogers, widow of William, residing 1 CONC at 1162 Giddings with no other Rogers mentioned. No mention of her in the 1 CONC 1890-91 directory. However, a necrology file stated Harriet M. As I recall (the letter was in a 1 CONC briefcase stolen from my car at the Minneapolis airport in1985), she said 1 CONC that my father's middle name came from his great-grandfather, John 1 CONC Wilson. She went on to tell about a model ship made from the wood of one 1 CONC of the ships commanded by Admiral Nelson before or at the time his death 1 CONC in October, 1805 at Trafalgar and told a bit about "Uncle Mont", her 1 CONC brother-in-law, who seemed to be somewhat a black sheep of the family. 1 CONC Dad was known as "Jack" to his friends at Madeline Island, especially 1 CONC Betty Hull, during the summers he and his parents spent on the Island 1 CONC around 1917; I suppose he told them about his famous ancestor and they 1 CONC gave him a new nickname. 1 CONT 1 CONT During two different visits to London, 1983 and 1997, I tried to learn 1 CONC more about John Wilson at the Public Record Office, Kew, Richmond, Surrey 1 CONC TW9 4DU, located southwest of London which has an extensive library of 1 CONC naval documents. I discovered there are two likely candidates for our 1 CONC man, seperated in age by about 10 to 15 years judging from the dates of 1 CONC their succession of commissions. 1 CONT My guess is that our John Wilson is the first one listed below: he was 1 CONC old enough to serve under Nelson (although Unite is not listed among the 1 CONC fleet at Trafalgar, he could have been on other ships earlier in fleets 1 CONC with Nelson); he had the more distinguished career; his income would have 1 CONC enabled him to afford a family about when Harriet was born; and he was 1 CONC ashore during times when he could have fathered her. (NOTE: as shown 1 CONC below in Miss Wraight's 6/17/99 letter to me, Wilson #1 is not our 1 CONC ancestor unless his marraige to Miss Fahie was the second marriage.) 1 CONC Whichever one he was, he was offered a title but refused since there were 1 CONC no male heirs to inherit it. His other daughters, after Harriet left, 1 CONC lived with their father until his death and then came to Cleveland to 1 CONC live with or near Harriet and William. 1 CONT 1 CONT As background, England and France fought on and off from 1780 through 1 CONC 1815. The period 1803-1805 was one which England feared invasion by the 1 CONC French. Admiral Nelson was Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean fleet, 1 CONC covering Toulon, with 13 ships of the line, one 50-gun fourth rate, 11 1 CONC figates, 10 sloopsof war and 11 smaller vessels; Admiral Keith commanded 1 CONC the Channel fleet off the Kent Downs. Most naval officers came from the 1 CONC gentry of the southern counties of England; clever men of the lower 1 CONC classes could rise to ship's master but seldom into the officers ranks. 1 CONC In January 1805, the total number of officers in the navy was 3,682. The 1 CONC major naval ports were Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Torbay, while Chatham 1 CONC was the major ship building center. There were few signifcant naval 1 CONC actions after 1815: in 1816, Lord Exmouth visited Algiers, Tunis and 1 CONC Tripoli to free British prisoners from pirates and in 1827 British, 1 CONC French and Russian squadrons destroyed Greek and turkish fleets at 1 CONC Navarino Bay, Greece. 1 CONT 1 CONT John Wilson #1 (this is not a complete summary of his career): 1 CONT Dates of commissions: Lieutenant 11/13/1796 1 CONT Commander 12/27/1808 1 CONT Captain 6/7/14 1 CONT According to the Navy List, April 1809,he was one of 43 lieutenants 1 CONC promoted to commander in 1808; there remained 731 lieutenants with equal 1 CONC or more seniority than he. The navy had 508 commanders, 610 captains, 64 1 CONC rear admirals, 58 vice-admirals, 48 admirals and 1 Admiral of the Fleet 1 CONC (Sir Peter Parker). 1 CONT 1 CONT According to Miss J.M. Wraight, Admiralty Librarian, Ministry of Defense, 1 CONC in her letter to me of 6/17/99, he appears in "Royal Naval Biography" by 1 CONC John Marshall, which states he was commanding the TUSCAN at the capture 1 CONC of the French convoy in the Bay of Rosas on Nov. 1, 1809, and that he 1 CONC married in 1821 the 3rd daughter of Rear-Adfmiral William Chas. Fahie, 1 CONC Caroline Constance; he was at the time captain of Fahie's flagship, the 1 CONC SALISBURY, on the Leeward Islands station. 1 CONT 1 CONT Service: 4/8/05 Unite,40 guns, Mediterranean 1 CONT 11/28/06 Spy, 16 guns,1st Lt., North Sea 1 CONC Convoy 1 CONT 1810-9/1/12 Tuscan (sloop), 16, Commanded; 1 CONC Mediterranean: 1 CONC 12/16/11 in Cadiz Bay; 10/10/12 arrived Spithead 1 CONT 9/5/12-7/1813 Arab (Brig), 18, Commanded; 9/17/12 1 CONC commissioned at Chatham; 1 CONC 10/18/12 convoy Spanish Ambassador to 1 CONC Gotherburg, returned 11/29 to Spithead; sailed 1 CONC 12/13/12 with W. Gage. 1 CONT 1/18/27 Bodicea, 46, Commanded; E. Indies 1 CONC to Chatham. 1 CONT 1/18/28-12/2/29 Tribune, 42,Commanded; Chatham until 1 CONC 6/30/28 when sailed to 1 CONC So. America to join Rear Adm. Sir Olway's 1 CONC squadron of 10 ships; ship remained on station 1 CONC after he left. 1 CONC 1 CONT By 1831, there were only 131 ships of all sizes in active service. He was 1 CONC still listed in ADM 11/63, Succession Book of Commissioned Officers 1 CONC 1836-1848 but with no assignments and no notation of death although such 1 CONC notes were made for others as late as 1847. He had not responded to the 1 CONC Admiralty surveys in the 1820s, sent to him at the Howe, Hendal (or 1 CONC Kendal) so no comparable details are apparantly available as with the 1 CONC next man. He is not listed as serving on cutters, tenders, signal 1 CONC stations, impressments, supply, etc. 1 CONT 1 CONT John Wilson #2 (born 1789): 1 CONT Dates of Commissions: Lieutenant: 2/1/09 1 CONT Commander: 6/6/15 1 CONT Captain: 10/22/30 1 CONT Service: 7/27/02-8/1/03 Blenheim, Donegal, Neptune & Magnificent; 1 CONC Volunteer; 1 CONC all were guardships in Plymouth. 1 CONT 8/2/03-10/2/05 Dragon, Midshipman; English Channel 1 CONC off Brest & Spain. 1 CONT 10/5/05-11/28/07 Melpomine (a captured French 1 CONC schooner),38, Mid- 1 CONC shipman; Mediterranean off Toulon. 1 CONT 11/28/07-9/29/08 Sultan, 74, Midshipman; Mediterranean. 1 CONT 10/1/08-7/31/10 Hind, 28, Lt.; a frigate in 1 CONC Mediterranean. 1 CONT 2/?/11-2/7/13 Boyne, 98, Lt. to Sir Harry Neale; 1 CONC blockading Brest & 1 CONC L'Orient, but every 4 to 5 months back to Ply- 1 CONC mouth for about 10 days. 1 CONT 1/19/14-9/22/14 Newcastle, 50, Lt.; In Channel in 1 CONC spring, ordered to 1 CONC Bermuda where damaged so after 2 weeks 1 CONC repairs, ordered to Halifax. 1 CONT 9/23/14-10/?/14 Centurion, 50, Lt.; Halifax. 1 CONT 10/?/14-4/?/15 Tonnant, 84, Lt.; To Jamaica and 1 CONC expedition against 1 CONT New Orleans. 1 CONT 4/?/15-6/5/15 Bulwark, 76, Lt.; Bermuda. 1 CONT 6/6/15-5/?/16 Gorce, 18, Commanded; sloop off 1 CONC Bermuda & No. 1 CONC America. 1 CONT 5/?/16-12/?/16 Portia, 14, Commanded; sloop picked 1 CONC up in Halifax, 1 CONC detailed on 6/28/16 to watch the fishing on Nova 1 CONC Scotia coast; on 7/16/16 left Halifax & arrived 1 CONC Spit- 1 CONT head 8/7/16 where crew 1 CONC paid-off. 1 CONT 5/4/28-1831 Victory, 104, Commander of 1 CONC flagship; Portsmouth. 1 CONC This ship was Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar on 1 CONT Oct. 21, 1805. 1 CONT No service is shown after 1831 according to ADM 11/63 although he is 1 CONC listed; no death notice. 1 CONT 1 CONT Note: 100 guns plus 3 decks 850 plus men Ship of the Line 1 CONT 90-100 3 decks 750-850 1 CONC '' 1 CONT 64-80 2 decks 500-600 1 CONC 50-60 1 CONC 2 decks 300-400 1 CONT 32-40 1 deck 200-300 1 CONC Frigate 1 CONT 20-28 1 deck 140-200 1 CONC Sloop of War 1 CONT 16-18 1 deck 90-125 1 CONC 1 CONT 1 CONT For more detail on this Captain in the Royal Navy, see the note in 1 CONC William Rogers', his son-in-law, section. 0 @I301@ INDI 1 NAME Isaac /Rogers/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 PLAC England 1 FAMS @F120@ 1 FAMC @F009@ 1 NOTE @NI301@ 0 @NI301@ NOTE 1 CONC The Rogers Family were not Church of England members; they were known as 1 CONC Dissenters, Independents or Non-Conformists which in reality were 1 CONC Congregationalist, originating in England about 1700. 1 CONT 1 CONT Isaac, Dorcas and Isaac Jr. are prominently written up in Felix.
